Pulled the template and the text paragraph had me dying.

That one of those intentional design decisions?

This is great! I mostly use Docs for collaboration but always find the experience jarring. I would always make tweaks like this but I didn’t know it’s so easy to save the changes for all future docs! That’s so awesome!! Thanks for sharing

Even when we were speaking about this last wk, I had no idea your newsletter would make me want to make the change myself. I haven’t used Google Docs much in the past, but now I absolutely am going to update my settings and start sending out docs w pride. 😆 LOVED this one!!

Love the fact that you are applying the principles in existing systems (GSuite) that are likely hard to shift away from or that people are “stuck” with. Then people see what you can do what the old way. How much more with new things like Figma.

Thanks! It's fun to create brand new experiences with the tools we use everyday.

So good!

I’ve become a big fan of the pageless view. Very freeing and great for tables.

Oh yeah, tables look great in this view.

This is so great. I did all of this except I used Proxima Nova, which you taught me about too. The only thing I can't get away from is white backgrounds on my text editor. For some reason any other color just feels so distracting and changes the "mood" of what I'm writing, if that makes sense. But thank you, this is great.

As long as it's an intentional decision, that's great!

What mood are you going for btw?

So I write a newsletter but spend a lot of time writing fiction, and recently, I’ve been writing humor and more vulnerable, personal essays. The problem is the color you suggest it’s just so calming that when I open it, I’m immediately feeling more calm and productive. Which is great most of the time, but not ideal if I want to write something kind of manic and funny, or sharp, or brooding, or fantastical. So I pick white because it’s a “blank” emotion.

But actually, thinking this all the way through, I’m going to try an experiment where I pick some default colors for different genres--a little yellow for wacky picaresque fiction, soft blue for vulnerable reminiscing essays etc.--and I’ll report back if it has an effect.

I hadn't even thought about this as a way to switch writing 'moods,' but you're absolutely right.

And I agree about writing funny or witty writing. I don't start off many of my drafts in Google Docs anyways, until I need to collaborate or get feedback.

I use IA Writer and I love the monospaced font because it feels sharp and prickly, to get me in a similar spirit.

"adjust the color of our pure black text" -> Please, no. This often makes it very hard for people with an assortment of vision issues (as simple as again) and on a variety of display devices. Black (#000000) text please. It's something I've heard frequently from readers of my sites.

Hey thanks for your comment! But, we're talking about the ratio diff between 21:1 vs 19.55:1 based on the HEX values I gave. This is really more about subtlety and not destroying the reading experience.

Honestly, in the past I would have absolutely agreed with you. It tool multiple complaints from readers of my site before I changed my thinking. Pure black solved everything.
