Hey Nate, great reflections as usual. Question for you - is there any part of you that felt (or even feels now) any concerns about having a kid later rather than sooner as an adult?
Thanks, Jonathan. None at all, now. I'd say about 3-5 years ago it was something that I was struggling with a little, in terms of how it might look externally from other parents. (Completely unfounded of course)
But for me, it was worth the wait and I'm happy it happened later because I feel more confident than ever about what I want out of life for me and my kids.
Appreciate your openness here. There's something particularly interesting about the intersection between Christian Deconstruction....and Plan Your Next. Though I'm sympathetic to "ex-vangelical" storytelling, I find that most of these stories from former christians end without a view forward. It's just simply a tale of what went wrong. Design is, I suppose, a construction project by definition. I appreciate you inviting us into that view forward - the hopeful, but uncertain and imperfect design project of fatherhood. I am not an "exvangelical", but am a designer and a dad. I guess the best thing to do is walk with "Confident Humility," as Dan Kent would say, as we build our own spiritual and relational legacy. You seem to be one who is well on his way with that type of disposition. Safe journey good sir.
Eric, I love this breakdown. In a way, starting a family is like starting a design project, and navigating is part of the early discovery phase. I can't help but be impacted by the past, but to move forward, I also can't let it hold me back.
Top of my mind is teleology, or the goal of my family going forward, without letting the past dictate the outcome. I can't control that, and so this was written from the mindset that I can now define what my family goals are, without sitting in judgment of the past.
Appreciate your insight, and I have yet to read Dan Kent's book! (It's sitting on my Kindle atm)
Love attention to details in illustration with Rowan’s name 🙂 and thank you for sharing your reflections on life guidance from Bible - I imagine it could be an intimate experience.
